In this series of things we were told were good for us, that turned out to be bad for us and things we were told were bad for us that turned out to be good for us, I’d like to talk about therapy.
I’ve spoken about this a bit in my previous blogs on letting go of some of my ideas about psychology and questioning models to the extent that many of them have fallen away from my understanding. I wanted to go a step further and talk about how therapy can actually be harmful for autistic people (and other people). Perhaps we can summarise this as particularly unhelpful if the need that is unmet is not actually being met by the therapist.
